Cloud shadows over the Mackenzie River Delta north of Inuvik, Northwest Territories
Our plan was to charter a float plane and fly to Herschel Island, 5km off the arctic coast in the Beaufort Sea, a 90 minute flight from Inuvik. However, this should not to be. Midflight our pilot informed us that the buildup of pack ice around the island was too much for his small plane to land safely. So instead he took us on a 4 hour sightseeing flight over the Mackenzie River Delta, west along the coastline to the breeding grounds of the Porcupine Caribou Herd in northeast Alaska. Seeing this vast, nearly empty land from a few hundred meters up and spotting the caribou, musk ox or a flight of Tundra Swan below you was a very special experience.
